OPIMy Private Jet

Decided to go for a bit of a darker nail color this week. I tend to wear mostly pastel or brighter colors in the summer but for some reason I’ve had the urge to go darker. I was initially leaning towards a black polish but since I’m visiting my parents for the long weekend (and my mother hates black polish) this one would have to do. This is the re-formulated version of My Private Jet. I’ve heard that the original was much more holographic but had a terrible formulation. I don’t own the origional so unfortunately I can’t compare the two. This polish is smooth and easy to apply. I tend to apply 3 coats with all of my OPI polishes but you could probably get away with two

Revlon – Red Hot Tamale

Essence – Nude It

Essie – Beyond Cozy

Here’s the manicure I’ve been sporting for the last couple days. At first I wasn’t sure but the more I wear it the more its grown on me! Red Hot Tamale is the perfect summer red shade, a true tomato red. I love the combination between the red and the more grey-toned taupe! I really wanted to use both colours and polka dots seemed like the easiest option. This is my first time wearing the Essie shade (previously featured in this haul post), and I can easily see myself pairing this with many other colours. Its the perfect almost silver- toned gold with a strong, dense, glitter shimmer throughout. Formula was great on all of these polishes!

A Nail Polish Haul

As promised on my last Nail of the Day post, here is a quick haul of my recent nail polish purchases. Now I want to preface this post by saying that I haven’t purchased a polish in quite some time now, and that I realize that this is definitely not a normal amount of polish to purchase in such a small time frame. However these are polishes that I’ve had on my to-buy list for quite some time, and by finding them on a sale… I just couldn’t say no. Here is a quick overview of all the polishes I purchased.

deborah lippmans
Here are my Deborah Lippmann purchases. From top left to right: Cuticle Oil, Good Girl Gone Bad and I’m Not Innocent. I have yet to use any of these polishes however I have swatched the two coloured shades on my swatch wheels. Good Girl Gone Bad is a gorgeous polish with a deep magenta base combined with a pink/purple shimmer. This polish dried pretty matte on my swatch wheel, but a top coat provided a smooth glossy finish. I’m Not Innocent is a light slightly-yellow toned nude shade; as I said I have yet to wear the polish however from the swatch this may take the place of ‘my perfect nude polish.’ These polishes were all purchased from The site will no longer be carrying the Lippmann brand so polishes are deeply discounted. If you are a Deborah Lippmann fan I would definitely suggest checking out the site!

essieNext up are two Essie shades. I’ve had each of these polishes on my to-buy list for quite some time now and finally decided to bite the bullet and purchase. Beyond cozy is an interesting polish, in the bottle it pulls more gold however when swatched it is a very finely milled silvery gold. If silver toned gold was a word, this polish would be its most accurate description. This polish is ALL shimmer; surprisingly the formula seems to be quite good; the shimmer is incredibly dense! Topless and Barefoot is another nude shade, this one is darker and more pink-toned compared to the Deborah Lippmann. I’ve wanted this polish  for almost a year now, however it never seemed to be in stock at Trade Secrets (where I typically purchase my discontinued polishes). I tend to prefer pink toned nudes against my skintone so I’m anxious to see if this polish will have been worth the wait!

These are the last 3 polishes of my haul. I’ve already done a post on Butter London’s
Queen Vic so I won’t talk too much about it. This is my first Butter polish and while at first I was a bit unsure; the longer I had it on, the more it grew on me! Revlon Colorstay‘s Top Coat has been my go-to top coat since I purchased it about a year or so ago. The proof that I love it so much is that this bottle is a repurchase! Its extremely rare for me to finish a polish; In all honestly I can probably count the number of polishes that I’ve actually finished! I haven’t tried the matching Base Coat and decided to go ahead and pick one up. I found the Colorstay polishes on an AMAZING deal at At $2 a bottle I really couldn’t pass this up, not pictured are the other 2 bottles of top coat that I purchased…yes this is excessive however my rationality was that now I won’t need to buy top coat for the next 3 years 😛 and with shipping costs being $5 flat, I wanted to order enough to make it worth it.

Butter LondonQueen Vic

This is my first Butter London polish and I must admit I have mixed thoughts. Pigmentation was great, I used two coats for the above image. However I found the polish to be a bit on the thick side, something that I’m sure can be fixed with some nail polish thinner but that is something I would prefer to not have to do on a new bottle. While I love the bottle shape and the lack of certain chemicals in a Butter polish, for some reason I’m just not drawn to the colours they release. Queen Vic is a polish that has been on my to-buy list for quite some time however there’s only about 1-2 other polishes at the moment that I would consider purchasing. I don’t typically wear purple polishes so I was a bit hesitant when I first used this polish however it has considerably grown on me. I do perceive this as being more of a fall shade so this may be the only time I use it for the next couple months.

I’ve actually purchased quite a few polishes within the last 2-3 weeks so expect a polish haul post within the next couple days!

Nicole by OPI – Khloe had a little lam lam

on index and ring finger Deborah Lippmann – Boom Boom Pow

First off sorry for the lack of bottle shot in this picture! This picture was actually snapped mid morning while I was running errands, I thought the light really captured the polish so I quickly tried to take a picture. Another reason why this isn’t the clearest shot, it can look quite odd taking a picture of your nails in public! This has been one of my favourite winter manicures, during the holiday season I was really into adding some sort of glitter into my weekly polish. Khloe had a little lam lam has quickly become one of my staple fall/winter shades. The perfect darkened greenish blue shade, its one of those colours that just looks good with my skin tone. I’d say this leans darker and greener than OPI’s Ski Teal we Drop, I actually preferred this polish so much that I gave the OPI one away! Somehow I couldn’t justify having both since I always preferred this one.

Deborah Lippmann’s Boom Boom Pow is one of my favourite polishes. I wear gold much more than I wear silver and this polish, although pricey, has never been one that I regret. My only gripe is that the large hexagonal glitters don’t apply as well as I would have liked. This may be a polish where you have to ‘place’ the glitter flecks to get a more uniform look.

OPI – William Tell Me About OPI

This is a shade that I half got for the name and half for the actual color. Although this polish is from the OPI Swiss collection of Fall 2010, the name makes me think of William Shakespeare; both in his literal name and the slight poetical whimsy of the of the polish moniker.

I bought this polish since it looked to be that similar dark eggplant shade of lacquers such as OPI’s Lincoln Park at Midnight but with a name I much preferred. The polish itself is a deep vampy purple, however I found it to lean more of a brown toned purple. The formulation was great and boy is this polish chip resistant! When paired with my favourite Revlon Colorstay top coat, my nails were still chip free an entire week later!

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure – Thinking of Blue

Earlier this year I went on the hunt for the perfect indigo shade. I had become recently obsessed with this indigo scarf that I had received as a gift some odd years ago and wanted a nail polish to match. Yes, matching a nail polish to a scarf seems quite strange but I was literally (and am still) obsessed with this shade. This seemed to be the closest I could find, with not quite enough purple this leans a bit more navy than indigo but is still a beautiful shade.

This is my first polish from the complete salon manicure line and I’m not quite sure how many more I will purchase. The formulation was good and when paired with my favourite Revlon Colorstay topcoat, I haven’t had any chipping for about a week. However the brush is flat and quite wide, not a shape that I am used to and took a bit of extra patience. While I prefer a thinner brush, if the right color came along I wouldn’t hesitate my purchase.

Monday Questionnaire

Soooo this has been a long blog hiatus! I’m back at school for the year and classes and assignments have meant many sleepless nights which unfortunately leads to a lack of blogging. But excuses aside, I’m back and although I haven’t made nearly as many posts as I would have hoped (how have I still not made a post on my trip to Alberta!? Is it too late for that now?) I want to get back into the swing of things. And what better way than to start off the week with a Monday Questionnaire! Questions provided by one of my favourite bloggers Amarixe

1.) Mood:
Anxious for the week ahead. The semester is quickly drawing to a close meaning the second round of midterms and term paper deadlines are right around the corner. I’m also slightly worried how bad Hurricane Sandy will hit both my University city and my parents house. There are some pretty large trees near both my homes so I’m hoping the winds won’t be enough to blow them over.
2.) On the topic of Hurricane Sandy, are any natural disasters common where you live?
I live in Ontario, Canada which is inland and away from many natural disasters. However Southern Ontario is going to feel some of the affects of Hurricane Sandy with heavy rains and winds supposed to reach up to 100km/hr! Hmmm but what are the chances of the University closing because of the winds?
3.) What is your favorite song at the moment?
Some nights by Fun. Some might consider it overplayed but whenever its on I can’t help but let it play.
4.) Current nail polish:
Essence – Modern Romance
I took my grad pictures last week (have some beautiful outdoor pictures in the Autumn leaves!) and thought this would be a great pinky nude that isn’t overtly distracting but at the same time isn’t a trend colour.
5.) If you could only use one makeup product, what would it be?
Concealor. I have some redness and some discolouration. I think a nice even skin tone is the perfect canvas. After that I would probably choose blush and eyeliner
6.) Current outfit:
Just took a shower after coming back from the gym so I’ve got on my oversized residence t-shirt from first year and some PINK flannel pyjama bottoms.
7.) Are you good at keeping in touch with friends and family?
I’d like to think I am. It’s hard to stay as close when you go from seeing people everyday to once every couple weeks but good friends are worth the effort.
8.) Are you excited about any holiday collections this year?
I’ve been intrigued by a couple of the holiday nailpolish collections but they’re all kind of jumbled in my head so I can’t pick any stand out favourites. I’m in love with the dark black based shimmery green polishes a number of companies have come out with.
9.) The world’s most wonderful chef is at your home ready to fix any meal you desire– what do you order?
I think a great chef can really show their skill with soup, salad and pasta. However I would have to add some of my all-time favourites to round out the meal (although with all of these courses this is looking more like a feast!), you can’t go wrong with crispy fritters and pecan pie!
10.) Weekly goals:
Basically school, school, school. I’ve got a heavily weighted midterm next week that I need to start studying for, but I’ve also got a stack of journal articles I need to get through so I can start my term papers. In other words it looks like its a long week ahead.

Joe Fresh – Wave

I picked up two Joe Fresh nail polishes while in Alberta (this is my first time dabbling in the brand) and, with the polishes at least, I’m pretty impressed! Wave is a pale robin’s egg or sky blue, a shade that I have had my eye on for a while but have never found one that was just right. Who knew I could score one on a 3 for $10 deal!

This isn’t entirely a cream polish, there is a slight shimmer however it is only noticeable in certain lighting and even then its not like this is a metallic polish or anything. Application was good, not as amazing as an essence or essie polish but not terribly streaky either. I’ve been using my Revlon Topcoat over each manicure now so it’s difficult to tell how chip resistant this polish is since the top coat works like glue.

This polish comes with 6ml as opposed to the 13.5 – 15 ml of an essie or OPI polish. But hey, considering I’ve NEVER finished a polish, I’ll gladly take the lesser volume. 2 coats gave full opacity

Essence- Nude It
Deborah Lippmann – Boom Boom Pow

I’ve been lusting after Deborah Lippmann’s Boom Boom Pow since the beginning of the year and about a month ago I finally bit the bullet and bought it! Deborah Lippmann is pretty hard to find in my area, let alone finding the full range. This along with the price tag of this polish left me eying longingly at a distance (the distance being my eyes to the computer screen). Eventually picked this up off of ebay and it was love at first sight! Don’t know why it took me so long to actually use the polish, but it is perfect in so many ways!

Boom Boom Pow is a gold multi-glitter polish with a gold shimmer base. I had been on the hunt for a polish just like this for quite a while, but was never able to find one that was just right….well until I found this polish that is. The glitter doesn’t apply as easily as the milani glitters however it looks absolutely beautiful on the nail, especially when it hits the light. I used Essence nude it as a base and it worked perfectly. This polish applies like a dream, completely opaque in 1 coat. Love this combination and can’t wait to add some golden glitter to my future manicures!

I do apologize for the over-saturation of this picture (curse you phone apps!) however it does show the truest dimension of the polish; I got a lot of color cast from the natural sunlight.
